A Fingerprint of Attention


Imagine two people visiting the same museum.


One spends twenty minutes studying battle scenes, kings and military maps. The other is drawn to family portraits, children's toys and scenes of everyday life.


Physically, they're looking at much the same thing: rectangles of canvas, oil paint, reds, blues and golds. Semantically, they're inhabiting completely different worlds.


New research suggests that after our eyes quickly orient themselves and notice visually striking objects, they begin searching for meaning. More remarkably, these patterns of attention appear to be surprisingly stable over time (a visual finger print unique to each individual). What consistently catches our eye seems to reflect enduring interests, values and ways of interpreting the world, like political leanings, hobbies, and psychological profile.


That has profound implications. AI models analysing eye movements may eventually be able to infer aspects of our identity not from what we click, search or buy, but simply from what we choose to look at.


The opportunities are significant, from earlier diagnosis of developmental conditions to more personalised educational tools. But the risks are equally real. As eye tracking becomes common in AR and VR devices, the same technology could allow advertisers and platforms to build detailed psychological profiles from our gaze alone.


The next frontier of personal data may not be our browsing history. It is our attention.
