A Pause in a Faster World: My AI Ritual

We often hear that AI makes us more productive, efficient, or optimized. But what if it could make us more fulfilled? In early July I began to use ChatGPT as a kind of reflective companion, not to do more work, but to help me live more consciously. Most mornings I sit by the pool or at my desk, open a chat, and talk through whatever the previous day had stirred up. What started tentatively has begun an almost daily ritual. I open a chat and speak my reflections on the previous day into ChatGPT. When I'm done I ask it for one personal and one professional reflection question
What surprised me is how it reflected things back to me I hadn’t slowed down enough to notice.
This post isn’t about earning more or achieving more. It’s about flourishing: living in alignment with your values, and nurturing a sense of purpose and hope.
Along the way I found a few ways AI can nudge us toward a fuller, quieter life. Not all of these will fit your world, treat them like suggestions, not prescriptions.
1. Clarify What Really Matters
Ask: “Help me write a personal mission statement that reflects what I value most.” ChatGPT can guide you through reflection questions that surface your core values, what psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan call the foundation of Self-Determination Theory: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. By articulating what truly matters, we stop chasing the wrong goals and start designing the life we want.
2. Design Simpler Days
Ask: “Help me design a daily routine that prioritizes calm and connection.” Instead of optimizing your calendar for output, use AI to build days around being. Whether that’s time for nature, reflection, or play, simplicity is a gateway to peace, not an absence of ambition, but a focus on essence.
3. Use It as a Reflection Partner
Ask: “Ask me three reflection questions about my day to help me learn something about myself.” AI can act as a gentle mirror in your journaling. Try answering the question, then ask it to ‘go deeper. Answer the questions as fully as you can. Some days the “go deeper” question frustrates me. Some days it lands exactly where it needs to. That’s the point, it keeps you honest.
4. Reframe Challenges Through Hope
Ask: “Help me reframe this setback as an opportunity for growth.” This is where Hope Theory comes in, the belief that hope is not wishful thinking but goal-directed energy plus the pathways to achieve it. AI can help you identify those pathways when your own seem foggy. One thing I’ve found helpful: ask for three reframes, choose the one that resonates, then ask it to sharpen it.
5. Build a Practice of Gratitude
Ask: “Prompt me to name three things I’m grateful for and why.” The science of gratitude shows it rewires our perception of sufficiency. This can help you remember that what you already have is often enough for me that might be a warm cup of tea, a friend’s message, my dog asleep under the table...
6. Learn with Curiosity, Not Comparison
Ask: “Explain [topic] to me like a wise friend, not a teacher.” Curiosity opens us up. Comparison shuts us down. Let AI satisfy your curiosity without the noise of social media, learning at your own pace, about the things that make your mind and heart come alive.
7. Create Space for Stillness
I’ve started using this before coaching sessions or big meetings. It shifts my breathing and the room meets me differently. Ask: “Give me a one/two/five-minute reflection or breath exercise to ground myself before a meeting.” AI can help you pause. A moment of stillness between tasks can return you to presence, the same presence that Viktor Frankl described as the space between stimulus and response (where freedom lives).
8. Strengthen Self-Compassion
Ask: “Help me write a kind response to myself after a mistake.” Fulfillment grows from gentleness. AI can help you practice (or remember or learn) the language of self-compassion, a skill often neglected in a world obsessed with hustle.
9. Rediscover Awe and Wonder
Ask: “Suggest small moments today where I might notice beauty.” Awe is fuel for Flourishing. It shifts our attention outward, humbling and expanding us at once. With a little prompting, ChatGPT can act as your reminder to look up, at the sky, a stranger’s kindness, or the the trees you’ve walked past a hundred times.
10. Design Your Next Chapter with Intention
Ask: “Help me imagine three versions of my ideal life five years from now, and what small steps I can take today.” AI can help you envision multiple possible futures, sparking hope and direction, both critical ingredients for a meaningful life.
And for each of the above remember this isn't about what AI says, the above is about you, and how you grow...
Living a fulfilled life isn’t about productivity hacks or peak efficiency. It’s about being in honest conversation, with yourself, with others, and sometimes with a digital companion. Conversations that help you pause, notice, and imagine again.
Because the purpose of technology isn’t to make us superhuman. It’s to help us notice what being human actually feels like.
