Calendar Bingo

Trying to schedule anything with adults has become its own competitive sport. We've all be in those discussions...

"Are you free next week?"

"I don't think so... I've got a graduation."

"How about the week after?"

"Training course."

"Tuesday?"

"Board meeting."

"Wednesday?"

"My daughter's concert."

"Thursday?"

"Client workshop."

"Friday?"

"I promised my partner we'd have dinner."

"Okay... the following Monday?"

"Hang on..."

(sound of furious calendar scrolling)

"...No. Dentist."

"Tuesday?"

"That's the day I'm pretending to catch up

on everything I didn't get done this month."

At some point it looks more like a guided tour of your lives than arranging a meeting.

"Oh, that's the week you're in Melbourne."

"And that's when your parents are visiting."

"I forgot about your conference."

"I just remembered I agreed to..."

Eventually, one of you triumphantly announces:

"I've found something! Tuesday... six weeks from now... 3:30 to 4:00."

"Perfect."

"What are we meeting about?"

"...I've no idea."

If nothing else, calendar negotiations are a surprisingly good reminder that everyone is carrying a full life that nobody else can see.

Attention is borrowed from your future self

Every time you give your attention to something now, you are taking time, energy, and mental clarity away from yourself later. It doesn’t feel like that in the moment. It often feels small. harmless.
