✨What Are Metaphors in Coaching? ✨Metaphors are powerful tools in coaching, acting as bridges between abstract ideas and concrete understanding.
In coaching conversations, metaphors help clients unpack (that's a metaphor!) and/or articulate complex emotions, visualize progress, and make sense of ambiguous thoughts by transforming them into relatable images or stories. They’re shortcuts that allow clients to sidestep overly analytical thinking and tap into deeper insights quickly.
Whether it’s talking about “climbing a mountain” to signify challenges or describing “stuck in quicksand” to illustrate feeling trapped, metaphors offer a relatable framework for clients to explore their situations from new angles.
When to Use Metaphors in Coaching? Metaphors aren’t just decorative language; they’re tools that, when used thoughtfully, can "open up" a coaching session.
Here are a few key moments to introduce metaphors:
When clarifying complex emotions: Metaphors help clients articulate feelings that are difficult to put into words, enabling them to express the inexpressible.
To help reframe perspectives: When a client is stuck in a limiting mindset, a metaphor can open up new possibilities, reframing the way they view a situation.
During goal-setting or visualization exercises: Using metaphors can make goals more tangible by linking them to relatable images, like “building a bridge” to represent steps toward a big goal.
In moments of resistance: Metaphors can make it easier for clients to discuss sensitive topics by taking the focus off them directly, using images like “walls” or “chains” to represent barriers.
To create a shared language: Some clients resonate with metaphors like “paths” or “journeys,” which help establish a common understanding, making it easier to return to these images in later sessions.
Listening for the Client’s Metaphors: The above isn't a check list, it' s guide book to help you explore metaphors together. One of the most effective (and respectful) ways to use metaphor in coaching is to borrow the language your client already uses. Clients often speak in metaphors without even realizing it, phrases like “I feel like I’m spinning plates,” “It’s an uphill battle,” or “I’ve hit a wall.” These are golden moments. Rather than introducing your own metaphor, stay with theirs. Ask curious questions to explore and expand: “What’s keeping those plates spinning?” or “Tell me more about that wall—how tall is it? What’s on the other side?” This approach keeps the coaching grounded in their world, not yours, and gives their inner landscape a voice. It also helps them engage with their own story more creatively, often leading to powerful reframes or next steps.
🚫When Not to Use Metaphors 🚫While metaphors are versatile, there are times when they may not be the best approach:
When a client isn’t resonating If a client doesn’t connect with the metaphor, it can create distance rather than understanding. Observe their reaction and pivot if it’s not landing.
When the situation needs precision If clarity and directness are crucial, using too many metaphors may obscure the issue. Stick to straightforward language in these cases.
In emotionally charged situations Some clients might feel diminished if their intense feelings are captured in a “simplified” metaphor, especially if they feel it trivializes their experience.
When a client’s worldview doesn’t align Certain metaphors carry cultural or personal connotations. Check to ensure the language aligns with their perspective.
Favorite Metaphors for Coaching Here’s a curated list of eight metaphors that bring clarity, encourage reflection, and foster growth:
🌉“Crossing the bridge” – Represents moving from the current state to a new way of being or thinking.
🧅“Peeling the onion” – For digging deeper into layered thoughts, feelings, or motivations.
🪞 “Holding the mirror” – Encourages self-reflection, helping clients see themselves from an objective perspective.
⛰️ “Climbing the mountain” – Emphasizes the effort and resilience required to reach goals.
🧭 “The compass vs. the map” – A metaphor for direction (values as a compass) rather than rigid steps (a map).
🌊 “Riding the wave” – For navigating difficult emotions or times, allowing clients to “ride” rather than “fight” challenges.
🌱 “Gardening” – Used to describe nurturing ideas, relationships, or habits over time.
❄️ “The iceberg” – Highlights how surface behaviors are often driven by deeper, unseen beliefs or emotions.

Metaphors are a coach’s shortcut to deep insight, offering clients new ways to see, feel, and engage with their experiences. But like any tool, it’s essential to use them thoughtfully, watching for cues from your clients to ensure the metaphor fits.
Experiment with these ideas in your next session, and notice how a well-chosen metaphor can open doors to understanding and movement.
As you grow your coaching practice, let metaphor be one more tool in your toolkit, helping you support clients in unique and powerful ways.
