Your relationship with your boss can be fraught with challenge, indecision and learning to navigate her or his preferences. But take a look at yourself and how you show up. Here are five stages of evolution in the boss-employee relationship, where would you put yourself on the scale?


  1. "Boss, I've got a problem, what should I do?" At this stage, you rely heavily on your boss for guidance and decision-making. It’s typical when you’re new to a role or tackling unfamiliar challenges, as you’re still building foundational skills. To move to the next stage, focus on brainstorming possible solutions before asking for help.


  1. "Boss, I've got a problem, and I'm thinking about doing this, is that okay?" Here, you start taking initiative by suggesting solutions while still seeking approval. It shows growing confidence and problem-solving ability as your boss mentors you toward greater independence. To level up, start implementing smaller solutions without asking for approval every time.


  1. "Boss, I've got a problem, and I'm gonna do this." Now, you take decisive action and keep your boss informed before proceeding. This reflects confidence in your judgment and strengthens the trust between you and your boss. To reach the next stage, focus on resolving issues independently and presenting your boss with updates instead of plans.


  1. "Boss, I had a problem, and this is what I did." At this stage, you solve problems independently and report back afterward. Your autonomy is evident, and your boss views you as reliable and capable of handling responsibility. To progress further, practice proactive problem-solving so effectively that your boss doesn’t even need to hear about minor issues.


  1. "Oh, that problem? Yeah, I took care of it. You didn’t need to know about it." This is the peak of trust and independence, where you handle issues seamlessly without oversight. Your boss sees you as a partner, freeing them to focus on strategic priorities. To maintain this level, keep honing your judgment and ensure your solutions align with broader goals and priorities.


Building a strong relationship with your boss is a journey of growth, trust, and independence. As you move through these five stages, from seeking guidance to handling problems without needing oversight, you not only gain confidence and skills but also demonstrate your value as a dependable team member. Each stage is a stepping stone, and with intentional effort, you can earn the trust and autonomy needed to thrive in your role.
