Pretty much every training program I've attended I have noticed that I have a whole host of ideas, insights and inspirations unrelated to the training (I generally get plenty of thoise about the training too).
In speaking with friends, colleagues and clients alike many have confirmed this experience and in look at the "why" behind the "what" several reasons are likely:
Cross-Context Thinking: Learning something in one context can unexpectedly trigger a thought or an idea in a completely different context. For instance, a concept in a leadership training might suddenly make someone think of a solution to a personal problem
Relaxed Attention: When we're not trying too hard to focus on one thing, our minds can wander and this often leads to creative insights. It's like when you have your best ideas in the shower or on your run. Id also hazard a guess that we are on our phones much less when in a training class!
Neurological Priming: Engaging in learning activities stimulates various parts of the brain. This heightened neurological activity can inadvertently spark ideas that are unrelated to the material at hand
Diverse Perspectives: In a training session, you're often exposed to different perspectives, either from the content or from other attendees. This can unexpectedly connect dots in your brain, leading to new insights
Psychological Distance: Being in a new or different environment, like a training class, can create a sense of psychological distance from daily routines and problems, which is known to enhance creativity and problem-solving
But the lesson from this reflection? Always have a notebook handy to capture those ideas so you can act upon then!
