The People Who Make You Smile When Their Name Appears
How many people are there in your professional network whose names make you smile?
You know the ones. You're scrolling through your inbox, checking LinkedIn, or looking at your messages, and suddenly you see a familiar name.
And you smile to yourself because that name causes a little lift in your spirits. A warm glow. Perhaps even a small leap of joy.

I had exactly this experience recently. An email arrived from someone I've known for years, and just seeing their name was a joy. Before I'd even read the message.
I'm not talking about the person who's sitting on a huge business opportunity. The potential client who might sign a contract that makes your quarter. Although, let's be fair, those messages can produce a certain amount of joy too.
I'm talking about something different. The people you've known for years. People you've worked with, learned from, laughed with, and maybe even struggled alongside.
I've been reflecting about what makes these relationships so special. And I think there are a few things.
Authenticity.
These are people who are comfortable being themselves. They don't need to perform, impress, or pretend. What you see is what you get. You can have an honest conversation, disagree about something, and still enjoy each other's company.
Expertise.
They're good at what they do. Really good. They know their stuff, they're generous with what they know, and you almost always learn something from spending time with them.
Fun.
This one matters more than we sometimes acknowledge. They're enjoyable to be around. There's humour, curiosity, and a willingness not to take themselves too seriously. You can have a difficult conversation and still find something to laugh about. Sometimes you laugh about the difficult conversation itself. Usually afterwards.
Resilience.
You've watched them navigate difficult times. Perhaps you've been alongside them through some of those times. You've seen setbacks, disappointments, unexpected changes, and the occasional spectacular mess. And you've watched them keep going. Not always gracefully. Not always confidently. But with a determination to find a way forward.
There's something deeply endearing about people whose humanity you've witnessed over time.
And perhaps that's the thing. These relationships aren't built through networking strategies, carefully timed follow-ups, or the occasional coffee designed to keep a contact warm.
They are built through years of shared experiences, small acts of generosity, conversations that go somewhere unexpected, and showing up for each other when there's nothing obvious to gain.
And over time, the relationship becomes its own reward.
I've been fortunate enough to work with some extraordinary people over the years. Some have become clients, some collaborators, some mentors, and some friends. A few have been all four.
And increasingly, I'm realising that one of the great pleasures of a long working life isn't simply the work you've done.
It's the people whose names still make you smile.
So, two questions.
Whose name makes you smile when it appears in your inbox? And perhaps more importantly, whose inbox lights up a little when they see yours?
