“Did I really say that?” Reflections on the magic of live speaking.

I’ve been in the human capital development space for close to 30 years now. In that time I’ve delivered keynotes, led workshops, run coaching sessions.

And yet, I’m still surprised when I see my own words quoted online.

Not because I don’t recognize the ideas, they’re mine, sure. They’re in the presentation. They’ve lived in my notes, my slides, and my head. But what surprises me is that I often don’t remember ever saying the words exactly like that.

That’s the fascinating thing about speaking live.

There’s always an interaction, a quiet collaboration, between me, the content, and the audience. Their questions, their silences, their confused expressions or their “I’m with you” nods… they all shape what I end up saying and how I say it.

Sometimes, the words that stick weren’t planned. They weren’t on the slides. They didn’t exist until that moment. And yet, those words are the ones that land. They’re the ones people write down, remember, and quote back to me later.

That, to me, is the magic of being present. It’s not just a presentation, it’s a co-creation.
