The Curious Pleasure of Listening to Sad Music

Sometimes, when I'm feeling a little melancholy, I reach for my playlist of sad songs.

You might think that when you're feeling down, the sensible thing would be to listen to something cheerful. Something upbeat to lift your spirits (btw I have a playlist for that too).

But there's something rather wonderful about putting on a beautifully sad piece of music and allowing yourself to wallow for a while. And yes I have an entire playlist for just that purpose.

It is very enjoyable

Turns out there's some interesting psychology behind this. Research suggests that listening to sad music can sometimes improve our mood, evoking feelings of nostalgia, tenderness and connection. There's also research linking sad music with increased mind-wandering which really resonates with me because when I listen to sad music, several things happen.

Sometimes it's the sheer beauty of the music that gets me. Other times a song transports me back to a particular place, a person or a moment in my life. And occasionally my mind simply wanders off, following an unexpected thread of thought to somewhere I hadn't intended to go.

I might find myself remembering something from forty years ago, imagining somewhere I'd like to visit, or simply enjoying the strange pleasure of feeling a little sad. And when the music finishes, I often feel rather better.

Perhaps there's something to be said for occasionally giving ourselves permission to be melancholy. To sit with a feeling, enjoy some beautiful music and see where our minds take us.

A little practical experiment: Next time you're feeling reflective, put on a favourite sad song. Put your phone down, close your eyes and listen. Notice where your mind wanders.

And here's my playlist of wonderfully sad songs for you to try": https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1a32R5BiMKpL6fFt7UDHcj?si=3ff01b4dc13b4d7b. Let me know how you get on?

And in closing, I'm wondering what your fave sad songs are? Share it in the comments. I'm always looking for new additions to my collection of musical melancholy.
